“It’s Not About How Long You Study… It’s About How You Use Your Time” – My UG TRB Journey

UG TRB Achiever English

Hi, my name is Sobana. I’m from Tiruvannamalai district, and I’m really happy to share that I got selected at the state level 26th place. I got selected in the UG TRB English provisional list.

This journey means a lot to me because it wasn’t easy, and it didn’t happen overnight.

If I look back, my preparation journey has been almost 10 years long. I’ve written many exams like UGC NET, TRB, and others.

There were times I felt stuck, times I felt tired, but I never completely stopped. Somewhere inside me, I always had this strong feeling that I have to achieve something in life.

My Biggest Motivation – My Family

I come from a simple family with three daughters, and I am the eldest. So naturally, I had this responsibility in my mind that I should support my family.

That thought itself kept pushing me to study, even when I didn’t feel like it.

For me, preparation was not just about getting a job. It was about changing my family’s situation.

From Self-Study to Taking the Right Support

For 10 years, I prepared on my own. I never joined any academy. I believed self-study was enough.

But one day, I happened to watch a class from Professor Academy. Honestly, it felt different. That’s when I realized something —

“Maybe self-preparation alone is not enough… Maybe I need guidance.”

Within a couple of weeks, I decided and joined. That decision changed my preparation completely.

My Preparation Style – Turning Every Line into Questions

I didn’t study in a normal way. My method was a bit different.

Whenever I studied a topic, I used to:

  • Take one line
  • Frame 4–5 questions from that line
  • Write everything in my own handwritten notes

So when I revise, it doesn’t feel like I’m studying. It feels like I’m reading a story. Every answer comes to my mind visually.

This method really helped me remember things for a long time.

It’s Not About Hours… It’s About Quality

Many people ask, “How many hours did you study?”

But honestly, I feel that doesn’t matter much.

What really matters is:

  • How you use your time
  • How you revise
  • How consistent you are

Instead of focusing on long hours, I focused on effective preparation.

In fact, before the exam, I spent one full month only revising.

Using Every Small Moment

I was working, so I didn’t have full-day study time.

But I didn’t waste the small gaps I had:

  • During school lunch breaks, I used to just take a glance at my notes
  • While walking back home, I listened to audio classes
  • Whenever I got free time, I revised

These small efforts made a big difference over time.

Recorded Classes Helped Me a Lot

Since I couldn’t attend all live classes, recorded sessions were very useful for me.

I used to:

  • Watch them when I was free
  • Pause and take notes
  • Rewatch difficult parts

This helped me learn at my own pace without missing anything.

Tests Made Me Realize My Level

One thing I strongly believe is —

“Tests show you where you actually stand.”

Sometimes, after writing tests, I felt like I didn’t study at all. It was scary.

But that feeling actually helped me improve. I started:

  • Studying more deeply
  • Collecting more notes
  • Strengthening weak areas

That pressure pushed me forward.

How I Managed My Notes

I never kept things separately.

If I got any new point or hint:

  • I wrote it in small notes
  • Attached it to the same topic page

So everything stayed connected.

Also, I used:

  • Blue pen for questions
  • Red pen for answers

This made revision easy and interesting.

My Daily Routine

I followed a simple routine:

  • Slept by 10 PM
  • Woke up by 4:30–5 AM
  • Studied early in the morning

I didn’t try anything extreme. I just stayed consistent.

The Toughest Phase of My Journey

During the last phase of my preparation, my mother got sick and had surgery.

I had to stay in the hospital for around 15–20 days.

But even there, I didn’t stop studying. I carried my notes with me and studied whenever I got time. I also listened to audio classes.

That’s when I realized:

“If we truly decide to achieve something, nothing can stop us.”

My Timetable & Self-Check System

I used to maintain a timetable including everything:

  • Study time
  • Work
  • Personal tasks

And I followed a simple method:

  • If I complete a task → ✔️ YES
  • If not → ❌ NO

This helped me track myself and stay disciplined.

Every tick mark gave me confidence that I’m moving closer to my goal.

What I Learned from This Journey

If I have to share what worked for me, it would be:

  • First, understand the syllabus clearly
  • Study from original sources
  • Don’t just read — convert into questions
  • Revise again and again
  • Attend tests regularly

My Advice to You

If you are preparing right now, I just want to say this:

  • Don’t wait for the exam notification
  • Don’t depend only on shortcuts
  • Don’t give up after failures

Start early. Stay consistent. Believe in yourself.

Final Words

I used to think success was very far.

But now I feel — it was always near, I just had to keep moving.

You don’t need to study 12–14 hours.

You just need to study smart, consistently, and with belief.

If I can do it, you can also do it.

Your success is waiting… just don’t stop.
