Hello, I am Saranya Devi from Pollachi. UGC NET was something I never expected to become a part of my life. After completing my PG, I was unsure about what to do next. With the support of my family and the encouragement of my teachers, I decided to prepare for UGC NET.
I cleared UGC NET in my first attempt, but achieving JRF was a much bigger challenge. I appeared for the JRF examination multiple times, and despite clearing NET, there was always a small difference between my score and the JRF cutoff.

My Biggest Success Secret – PYQs & Tests
One of the biggest lessons I learned during my preparation was the importance of Previous Year Questions (PYQs).
PYQs helped me understand:
- How questions are asked in the examination
- Important concepts and repeated patterns
- How to approach different types of questions
- Which areas needed more preparation
Tests were equally important. After every test, I analysed my mistakes instead of simply moving on to the next test. I corrected my mistakes, revised the concepts and attempted the test again.
This process helped me improve my score and avoid repeating the same mistakes.
Consistency is More Important Than Motivation
During preparation, motivation can come and go. Sometimes we study with full motivation, and sometimes we completely lose interest.
But I understood that consistency is what really matters.
Having a clear preparation strategy and following it regularly helped me move forward. With proper guidance and continuous practice, even difficult topics started becoming easier.
Don’t Fear Paper I
Mathematics and Data Interpretation were initially difficult for me. I used to skip questions because I was not confident. But after learning the right techniques and practising regularly, I was able to attempt questions that I previously avoided.
Similarly, Indian Logic was something I initially wanted to skip because I found the concepts difficult to understand. With proper explanation and guidance, I realised that it was much easier than I had imagined.
Don't Skip Difficult Units
In Tamil, Ilakkanam and Thiranayvu were among the areas where I struggled the most. Instead of avoiding them, I followed my faculty’s guidance and continuously practised through tests. Eventually, I was able to score well in those areas.
This taught me one important lesson:
A topic may look difficult simply because we haven’t understood it properly yet.
Avoid Careless Mistakes
Another important lesson I learned was to read every question completely before choosing the answer. Sometimes, we see a familiar question and immediately assume that we know the answer. In that hurry, we may miss an important word or condition in the question.
So, always:
Read → Understand → Analyse → Answer
A small careless mistake can cost valuable marks.
My Message to UGC NET Aspirants
If you are preparing for UGC NET or JRF, don’t give up just because you missed JRF by a small margin.
- Stay consistent.
- Practise PYQs.
- Attempt tests regularly.
- Analyse your mistakes.
- Follow proper guidance.
- And most importantly, don't let temporary failures make you quit your goal.
