Tamil Nadu TRB Plans To Conduct 6 TNTET Exams In 2 Years

6 TNTET Exams in 2 Years

Introduction:

The Teacher Eligibility Test (TET) was first introduced in 2011 as a landmark reform to improve teaching standards across India.

The move came under the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education (RTE) Act, 2009, when the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) made it mandatory that every candidate aspiring to teach Classes 1 to 8 must pass TET.

Tamil Nadu was quick to adopt this policy.

Through G.O. Ms. No. 181, dated November 15, 2011, the state government officially implemented the TET requirement, with the Teachers Recruitment Board (TRB) designated as the nodal agency to conduct the examination.

The very first Tamil Nadu Teacher Eligibility Test (TNTET) was conducted in 2012, marking the beginning of a new era of accountability and quality in the teaching profession.

Fast forward to today, TNTET has once again become the focus of national and state-level attention.

Despite its importance, Tamil Nadu has conducted only six regular TNTETs and one special TET in the past 12 years, far fewer than the mandated one exam per year.

Now, in response to the Supreme Court’s recent ruling, the Tamil Nadu School Education Department has announced plans to conduct six TET exams within the next two years—a decision that has the potential to transform the careers of thousands of aspiring and in-service teachers.

Supreme Court’s TNTET Mandate: Why It Matters

The Supreme Court has made it absolutely clear:

  • No teacher can continue in service without passing the TET.

  • No promotions can be granted to teachers who have not cleared TET.

  • Only teachers with less than five years of service left are exempted.

This decision effectively closes all back doors. Whether one is an aspiring candidate or an experienced teacher aiming for career growth, TET is now non-negotiable.

The judgment also exposed Tamil Nadu’s irregular conduct of the exam.

In the last 12 years, only six regular TETs and one special TET were conducted, even though guidelines require at least one TET every year.

This meant many deserving candidates never got a fair chance. To make up for this lost time, the government is now accelerating the exam frequency by holding at least three TETs every year for the next two years.

Why Multiple TETs in Two Years Is a Game Changer

For students and teachers alike, this announcement transforms the preparation landscape:

More Attempts, More Chances:

Instead of waiting years for the next exam, candidates will now have multiple opportunities within a short span.

Job Security & Career Progression:

In-service teachers risk losing jobs or promotions without passing TET. This urgency will drive a massive number of candidates to attempt the exam.

Private School Inclusion:

For the first time, the SC ruling clarifies that even private school teachers must qualify through TET, expanding the pool of candidates.

Pressure to Perform:

With the pass percentage in Tamil Nadu as low as 4.5%, the exams remain tough, and success requires systematic preparation.

Understanding TNTET: The Structure and Challenge

The Tamil Nadu Teacher Eligibility Test (TNTET) is conducted by the Teachers Recruitment Board (TRB). It consists of two papers:

Paper I: For teachers aiming to teach Classes 1–5.

Paper II: For teachers aiming to teach Classes 6–8.

Each paper carries 150 marks, and candidates must score 60% (90 marks) to qualify, with a 5% relaxation for reserved categories.

The syllabus includes:

  • Child Development and Pedagogy – the most challenging section for many.

  • Language Papers (Tamil, English, or other regional options).

  • Subject Knowledge Papers (Mathematics, Science, Social Science, etc.).

Despite its straightforward format, the difficulty level and the breadth of the syllabus make TNTET one of the toughest eligibility exams in the state.

Why Aspirants Struggle to Clear TNTET

The staggeringly low pass percentage of 4.5% highlights the exam’s competitiveness. Many teachers and students fail to clear due to:

  • Lack of conceptual clarity in Child Development and Pedagogy.

  • Inadequate preparation strategies.

  • Over-reliance on self-study without guidance.

  • Limited access to updated study materials and mock tests.

This is where the role of structured coaching becomes indispensable.
