Hello, I am Sandhya. I completed my LLM in Human Rights and successfully qualified for UGC NET JRF in Law. My journey was not easy, especially while balancing preparation with professional responsibilities. But with proper guidance, consistent preparation, PYQs, mock tests and regular revision, I was able to achieve my JRF goal.
Watch Sandhya’s UGC NET JRF Success Story
From Self-Study to the Right Guidance
Initially, I started my UGC NET preparation through self-study. For the first few months, I tried to prepare on my own, but the Law syllabus was vast, and it became difficult to understand everything systematically.
That was when I decided to look for proper coaching. After joining Professor Academy, concepts became easier to understand, especially difficult Law provisions and Articles, because they were explained with simple examples.
My First Attempt Taught Me an Important Lesson
After preparing for a few months, I appeared for the December 2023 examination and qualified for PhD, but I could not achieve JRF.
Instead of giving up, I analysed my preparation and understood that I needed to focus more on PYQs, high-weightage topics and repeated revision.
PYQs Were a Game Changer
I practised PYQs extensively, covering questions from 2018 onwards, and didn’t stop with simply answering them.
I analysed:
- Where I made mistakes
- Why I selected the wrong answer
- How questions were framed
- Repeated concepts and questions
- How the same concept could be asked differently
This helped me identify one of my biggest problems: careless mistakes caused by answering before fully reading the question.
Focus on High-Weightage Topics
Instead of trying to study everything equally, I focused more on important and high-weightage areas.
For Law, subjects such as Constitutional Law and Public International Law received repeated revision and conceptual understanding. For difficult areas, I focused on important sections, doctrines, concepts and topics that appeared frequently in PYQs.
Working Professional Preparation Strategy
Preparing for UGC NET while working can be challenging.
My strategy was simple: when I couldn’t attend live classes, I used recorded sessions. I divided my preparation between morning and evening, spending time on: Recorded Classes → Short Notes → Revision → PYQs
On weekends, I dedicated more time to preparation and mock tests.
Paper 2 First – My Exam Strategy
During the examination, I preferred to attempt Paper 2 first. I completed the Law questions first and then moved to Paper 1. This helped me answer familiar questions confidently and manage my examination time better.
If a question was unfamiliar, I avoided spending too much time on it. I would read it carefully, consider the options and use elimination where possible before moving ahead.
Revision is More Important Than You Think
One of my biggest mistakes in my earlier attempt was not revising enough. I assumed that because I had already studied a topic, I didn’t need to revisit it. Later, I realised that repeated revision builds confidence and helps recall important concepts during the examination.
This time, I made revision an essential part of my preparation.
Mock Tests: Don't Look Only at Your Score
Completing mock tests is not enough.
After every test, analyse your mistakes. Sometimes, the marks we lose are not because we don’t know the topic, but because of:
- Not reading the question completely
- Overconfidence
- Misunderstanding what the question is asking
- Forgetting a concept
Test analysis helped me identify these mistakes and avoid repeating them.
You Don’t Have to Complete Everything Perfectly
I did not completely master every single unit. For difficult areas, I focused on important topics, repeated PYQs and scoring portions. For subjects I was comfortable with, I studied them more thoroughly.
The important thing is to understand where you are strong, where you are weak and how you can maximise your score.
Professor Academy Made Preparation Easier
Professor Academy’s recorded classes, mock tests and PYQs were extremely useful, especially because I was working and couldn’t always attend live classes.
Having the study materials, MCQs, classes and tests available in one place made preparation much easier. The regular reminders and encouragement also helped me stay accountable.
My UGC NET JRF Success Formula
Proper Guidance + Consistency + PYQs + Mock Tests + Revision + Time Management
You don’t need to study for extremely long hours every day. Even one focused hour or a few consistent hours, depending on your schedule, can make a difference when you follow a disciplined routine.
My Message to UGC NET Aspirants
If you are a working professional preparing for UGC NET JRF, don’t think that your job or busy schedule means you cannot achieve your goal.
