Frequently Asked Questions
What is the UGC NET exam and who conducts it?
UGC NET (National Eligibility Test) is a national-level eligibility exam conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) on behalf of the University Grants Commission.
Candidates who clear UGC NET become eligible for two things: the position of Assistant Professor in Indian universities and colleges, and JRF (Junior Research Fellowship), a fellowship that funds Ph.D research.
When is the UGC NET exam conducted and how many times a year?
UGC NET is conducted twice a year, in June and December, by the National Testing Agency (NTA).
Application windows vary with each NTA notification cycle. Candidates should check the official website, ugcnet.nta.ac.in, for the current schedule before applying.
How many papers does UGC NET have and what is the exam pattern?
UGC NET has two papers taken on the same day: Paper 1 has 50 questions for 100 marks and is common to all candidates, while Paper 2 has 100 questions for 200 marks and is subject-specific.
- Paper 1: 50 questions, 100 marks common to all candidates (Teaching & Research Aptitude)
- Paper 2: 100 questions, 200 marks subject-specific (candidate’s chosen subject)
Total exam duration is 3 hours, and there is no negative marking for wrong answers.
What is the UGC NET cut-off, and what is the difference between JRF and Assistant Professor?
JRF requires a significantly higher cut-off than Assistant Professor eligibility, because JRF also comes with a Ph.D research stipend and has an age limit, while Assistant Professor eligibility has no age limit.
- JRF (Junior Research Fellowship): monthly stipend (currently approx. ₹37,000 + HRA) to pursue Ph.D research; cut-off is higher; age limit up to 30 years (general category)
- Assistant Professor Only: eligibility to teach as a professor in colleges; cut-off varies by subject and category (community); no age limit
Exact cut-off marks differ by subject and reserved category and are published by NTA in the official results for each session.
In which languages is the UGC NET exam conducted?
UGC NET is a Computer-Based Test (CBT); Paper 1 is available in both English and Hindi, while Paper 2 is mostly conducted only in English.
Exceptions apply to language-specific subjects for example, Tamil Literature is examined in Tamil itself, since the subject matter is language-based.
How Many Attempts Are Allowed for the UGC NET Exam?
Yes , for Assistant Professor eligibility there is no limit on age or number of attempts, so a candidate can write UGC NET as many times as needed.
The only exception is JRF, which carries an age limit (30 years for the general category, with relaxation for women and specified categories up to 35 years).
